Create your own Pop Culture on Twitter

The first thing my friend Adriana did when she signed up for the extremely hip and popular Internet app Twitter was click on Find People so she could populate her feed with friends she knew. I think she found about 5 actual contacts, but none that were active. However, after becoming more familiar with the software, she realized that she could add celebrity Twitters and create her very own pop culture RSS feed!
The most interesting celebrity feeds on Twitter she found are:
Warren Ellis – Ellis is a renown comic book/fiction writer known for the acclaimed Transmetropolitan and Hellbrazer series, as well as prose novels such as Crooked Little Vein and Listener. Joining his Twitter has kept me abreast of his work, but also has given me a peek into his very active imagination and sarcastic (and very British) humor. He also responds to your Tweets!
Hugh Jackman – This Hollywood star is best known for his role in X-Men as Wolverine, but his Twitter lets us into a more private world where we see that Jackman is actually a really nice guy (who else would pay for breakfast for hundreds of fans waiting to see his movie??)
Rainn Wilson – Also known as Dwight from hit NBC series The Office, Wilson has a very funny and frequently updated Twitter that shows him jostling back and forth with other comedians, and even regular ol’ readers like you and I!
William Shatner – The original Captain Kirk of Star Trek is still kicking it online and has now picked up the pace with his Twitter, adding more frequent updates and interesting links relating to himself, Priceline, and even the new Star Trek movie.
Dave Mustaine – Lead singer and guitarist of thrash metal band Megadeth, Mustaine gives his fans updates on recording, touring and is looking for you to join his page and spread the word.
John Mayer – Popular guitarist and singer John Mayer has become notorious for his Twitter updates and his candor in general. Even if you aren’t a fan of the man’s music, it is definitely worth checking out his page because you’re bound to be on top of something that will be gracing Star magazine next week!
So think of a few celebrities you like and look up if they have a Twitter! There’s also always the option of trying the Suggestions tab to see who Twitter thinks you should follow. Have a blast – and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be able to get a tweet back from your favorite star!

Forget MySpace and FaceBook – check out Twitter

You always hear people talking about social networking sites like MySpace, Friendster and Facebook. Forget about those sites and check out Twitter! Everyone is all hot and bothered by the new internet craze called Twitter. It is on the lips of every CNN news anchor, Conan O’Brien talks about it on the Tonight Show on NBC, and even recently my own mother has started twittering.

Twitter is a great way to keep in touch with friends, family, co-workers and other people you who want to know what’s going on in your life when you want them to. You can send out tweets through your phone or computer and people can follow you through their phone or computer.

More than just a large way to “text the world” Twitter has become a way to reach a large amount of people in a very short span of time with a very short number of characters. It’s great for on the go and when there’s too much people to stay in touch with you can just twitter to let them know what’s been going on with you.

You can also send a twitpic, which lets you share pictures with your followers. For example, when you are on vacation, take a picture with your camera phone and upload it straight to twitpic from your phone to let your followers see what you’re doing at that very moment.

Try using the search engine and find your family and friends who may be on twitter. You might want to follow people as well and get their updates. You can reply directly to your friends twitter updates and they can do the same. You don’t have to worry about privacy because you can make your page private and only let your friends view your updates or you can make it public for everyone to view.

You can control who follows you also by accepting or denying peoples requests. If you don’t know anyone on twitter there is a “Suggested Users” page where you can find interesting people to follow.
A lot of celebrities are on twitter too. Try doing a name search to find your favorite celebrity and follow them to get their updates. You’ll find everyone and anyone on twitter.

Also try following your favorite television show or your favorite store you love to shop at. It’s a great way to find out when the store is having a sale or other great deals. I used the “invite by email” page on twitter and got all my family and friends to sign up and follow me and I’m following them too.

I know in my experience I have used Twitter in more than just a causal way. I have found that Twitter can be a useful funnel of people into your own blog or actual money making website.

The thing is that you have to have a good hook. You have to have a gimmick that no one else uses. For me, I have used a “joke a day” idea to keep people interested in my website. The jokes pertain to the topic of my website and I include a link to my website in each Twitter post.

This idea can be adapted in a number of ways for your website or business. If you have a humorous business you can go the “joke a day” route. Serious business men might not want their business promoted by whatever lame quips you have hired the temp to come up with.

You can also try a “fact of the day” but make sure to make it interesting and make sure it relates to the type of business you are trying to promote using Twitter. Once people are hooked on your “whatever it is of the day” then you can watch the ad dollars start rolling in.

It doesn’t take much time to set up a Twitter account or to come up with a bunch of jokes, or ideas, or facts of the day. All you need is 20 minutes on Google and you are all hooked up.
Who knows, once this Twitter craze dies down, your company might still be known as that one place where they give out the interesting facts, or silly puns.

I would image that once you have hooked your new clients in with Twitter, your fabulous customer service and dedication to a quality product will take over.

No matter what age you are, twitter is great, fun and easy to use.

Celebrities are the driving force of Twitter’s popularity

At first glance, Twitter may only look like a site full of Facebook status updates. But to those of us Twaddicts (Twitter addicts), we know that it is so much more.

Among other things, Twitter allows you to: communicate with celebrities (if you’re interesting enough this can be a two-way conversation), stay posted on what your favorite celebrities are doing and/or thinking, keep tabs on where your favorite celebrities are, know what celebrity friends your favorite celebrities have, did I mention Celebrities?! Celebrity usage is the driving force of Twitter’s popularity. The fact that Twitter is so easy to use, it allows celebrities to do-it-themselves. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about talking to a publicist or personal assistant; you know you’re getting the real deal. If it weren’t for celebrities being addicted to Twitter, it would not be as addicting for the average Joe.

Following celebrities on Twitter is so popular, there is a website dedicated to it. On CelebrityTweet.com, there is a list a celebrities whose tweets are posting in real time on the site. Celebrities were always sitting so high up on a pedestal and now, thanks to Twitter, we can reach them and say hello everyday until they say hello back. Sounds a bit stalker-like, but it works.

Some celebrities are even hip to SayNow, a free site that allows you to receive voice messages from your favorite celebrities. I have to admit, when I get a text to my phone that one of my favorite celebrities just left a voice message, I listen to the message pretending it was sent to me personally.

I must thank Twitter for allowing me to be introduced to this site which I so love. While you are getting your heavy dosage of celebrities, you may want to chat with other people and look popular yourself with a lot of followers. You can go to wefollow.com and find people with the same interest who you can follow and they may follow you back.

However, the fastest way to get quality followers who are genuinely interested in what you have to say goes back to celebrities. If you can get a celebrity to retweet one of your tweets, you will see your followers dramatically increase before your eyes.

Again, you must say something interesting or extremely funny within the 140 character limit. You may want to check out this Twittionary full of Twitter lingo that will help you say everything you want to say using 140 characters.

Twitter allows you to get a good understanding of celebrity personalities. Some celebrities may annoy you with their tweets and cause you to stop following them. If you love everything about celebrities and want a way to be in the know, go register to Twitter and start following your favorite celebrities now. It will become your favorite pastime!
